Have you ever seen a barcode or stickers on some fruits or vegetables? When you see this, you should be careful. These stickers has a meaning and has a lot of information that tells us about the fruits or vegetables. PLU code or Price lookup number that was printed as stickers has a information how the fruit or vegetable was grown. It is either organically grown, genetically modified, or has a pesticides, chemical fertilizers, herbicides, or fungicides. Here is how to identify what these PLU codes mean: - If the code has 5-digit and starts with number 9 it means fruits and vegetables was organically grown. However, a 4-digit code that starts with number 3 or 4 means that fruit or vegatable has pesticides in it or it was conventionally grown. - If the code with 5-digit starts with number 3 it simply means that the fruit or vegetable was irradiated or electronically pasteurized. - If the PLU code with 5-digit starts with number 8 means that the fruits or vegetables was genetically modified. - If the PLU code starts with number 6 its production was pre-cut. - If the fruits or vegetables doesn't have a sticker code, it means that it wasn't imported or the sticker was removed for some reason. But if you know where it came from then don't worry. The International Federation for Produce Standards really stricted to put these kind of codes so that people will know its meaning. In conclusion, you should check the code of the fruits or vegetables that you buy so that you'll know if it's healthy, safe or not good.
